Constructed in 1320 for Cansignorio della Scala of the mighty Scaligeri clan, Marostica’s lower castle was restored many times over the centuries. When the League of Cambrai damaged the town’s upper castle, this lower castle in the town square became the Podesta Veneziano in the early 16th century. Today the castle serves as the town hall and merits a visit for the exhibit displaying costumes and weaponry used over the years in the Partita ai Scacchi. Rampart walls connect the lower castle to the Castello Superiore (Upper Castle, right), where visitors can walk its walls and discover magnificent views of the zone from its towers. The Castello Superiore is only a five-minute drive from the town center. From SS248, follow signs for the upper castle (just west of the walls) as the road winds you to the hilltop.
